Les’s Accountability

Today from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., I have a job club to help with job searches, interviews, and the application process. I also created the accountability page and updated the profile. I will continue to work from https://www.greatfrontend.com/questions/user-interface/holy-grail to add more practice technical skills for my portfolio. Stay Tuned!

Today I went to the Job club at 10. They talked about transferable skills…I updated the portfolio. I’m not sure that the class will help me find an actual job, but it’s only day 2 of the 4-week program. I focused on creating a contact form in the Visual Studio code. I also put in five different job applications through the actual websites and not through Zip Recruiter Phil. I even got a few robot response emails. We did good today, folks.

Finding a job50

It’s frustrating out here in this wild wild world of the job search. Not gonna lie here, folks. I think I have sent my Resume out to the whole world. Now I must wait until I am discovered. Today I’ve taken to rewriting the entire website www.w3schools.com . I am holding on to my coding skills with a death grip. Today I am working on coding a to-do list in Visual Studio Code. I also am communicating with a client to develop a simple one-page site to help sell her poster collection. We are discussing functionality and design now.

August 09

Today, I got to play with Figma. I stumbled upon this little itty bitty job in the mail room of my apartment building. I started working on those social skills by networking. I say Hello now to my neighbors instead of ducking and running by as fast as I can. The client wanted a simple green sign-up sheet flyer for a Labor Day BBQ. She offered to pay me, but who charges little old ladies for five minutes’ worth of work? I set up my Fivver account for freelancing so I could get some more little projects, but when we got to the part where I’m supposed to put a price tag on my work, I was so stuck. At this point, I would pay them money to just work on a structured project again. That’s no good folks. My bank account got back to me and said to devise a better plan. I started putting applications in everywhere now. Not just tech jobs, fingers crossed, AMC movie theaters call me back. A little part-time busy work to fill the wallet, and today, to fill the project itch, I’m exploring https://www.hackforla.org/. I’m still waiting on the client from the poster project to decide on a domain name, theme, colors, and images for their web store. Today I may go ahead and throw together a few styles to give her a few ideas to help move this along.

August 20: I DUD IT FOLKS!

FOUND THE JOB!100

I got a job, folks! I start for Target on Thursday, the 24th. I DUD IT! I was cool as a cucumber during the interview, and all my best answers came flowing off my tongue like butter. I didn’t stammer or stumble once! Now, it’s just general stocking and organizing the store. I get to keep busy during the day, which is absolutely right up my alley. They offer educational incentives and lots of benefits to their employees. It becomes meaningful work because there are opportunities here within Target to achieve my goals of expanding my skills. I have already spent my very first paycheck. First, I’m going to fill the cupboards with groceries; I’m not going to be able to shut the cabinets. Then I am totally renewing my SSL certification because there is a 9/20 date on my Inmotion account that is seriously bothering me. I also broke people. I have to have the stackables pro version because I want animations and transitions, and I can’t do that with the free version. Those buttons out of line on the homepage will eventually have a little character that is skipping down the buttons like stones… When you click with the. mouse or hover, he will jump up and down with joy. And guess who can finally pay for the next AI course on Coursera. Yes, I know, I am supposed to be getting a job to pay the bills, but web design is expensive, folks, when you get down to paying for the tools you need to accomplish things. So excited. Now that I don’t have to put in job applications, I can get back to focusing on the skills. Thank you so much Target for giving me this opportunity to provide for my family while I pursue my tech dream job!

August 27

My first week at Target, and I am so excited. I absolutely love the way that they have their whole system set up. Now Yall know I can’t go much into it legally, but I am totally geeking right now on my new tech toys that came with my job. (I did stab myself with the low tech box cutter tho, second-day folks, No Lie. Blood gushed everywhere. I cleaned it all up. Shhh. Let’s just keep this between us mmmmkkkk.) Target also offers a program that will help pay for my education. They offer so many benefits and everyone has been so great to me the first few days. I am so happy. I applied for a few scholarships to help me cover a few more programs and certification tests this week. Once I have those set up I plan on moving through Java onto the next language. I am reviewing responsive design and Plan to complete at least one new technical skills project this week. I also plan to start going through Target’s website. I’m already in the door now.

September 22

I am officially a Bruin now! Through the Targets Guild Program, I’ve enrolled in Bellevue University to complete my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science. Codetalk gave me the itch, the drive. I still dream in code months after the world opened up from that sweet little taste of front-end web development. I accepted the job at Target with just the intention of paying rent while I combed through all the free classes and resources I could find. I felt discouraged in searching for my tech job. I want to work on websites and design, not just work at the tech help desk changing passwords for people. I’ve already started inspecting and debugging the Target website. When job searching, I kept running up against my own lack of experience and knowledge. I targeted Target (see my pun…) because it was close to my house, but I never dreamed within three weeks of working there that they would also be my ticket to my degree. If there’s a will, there is a way. I am ever so grateful for all my opportunities. They are bouncing all over the place; I just have to grab which one I want.

November 12

I got the confirmation email today. The Target Gulid program did everything they said they were going to do. Today I got the links for my textbooks…I am truly excited that one of my first classes is Microsoft 365. I could do without the introduction to English; I feel like I am cheating on my Grammarly and QuillBot. Count down, folks, till the 27th.

March 03

Nine credits down. I have never been prouder of anything in my life, as I am of that 4.0 GPA.
